In addition, the case study format helps to retain the focus on
individuals, as contrasted with aggregates. Such a focus is
appropriate for educators, for whom “questions about meaning and
perspective are central and ongoing” (Donmoyer, 1990, p. 197). The
narrative excerpts and low-inference descriptions leave room for
further interpretation. Each “story” can edify high school educators
and counselors, gifted-education teachers, university admissions
officers, mental health counselors, and parents as they and other
important players contemplate ways to support high ability students
during times of personal turmoil, uncertainty, and uneven or
interrupted development (p.35).
