Instructions:
Develop an educational program regarding health literacy and pediatric vaccine uptakes.
Discuss how will data be analyzed for your program (data analysis should relate to your project. Provide details such as time frame collection, instrument, & T-test statistical method)
Discuss how will you manage this data. (include a comprehensive step by step plan of how will the data be handled from collection to destruction)
Below is a brief synopsis of the project:
Abstract:
Health literacy is vital for individuals to make appropriate healthcare choices, improving communication barriers and enhancing health outcomes for themselves as well as their family members. Low health literacy in parents creates a lack of understanding and knowledge about childhood immunizations. Therefore, it can impact the long-term health outcome for families. This quality improvement project will utilize Nutbeam’s health literacy Model to promote health literacy and increase childhood immunizations for their children. This project targets homeless parents who resides in shelter with children ages two months to five years old. The QI project will be conducted in two transitional housing shelters in Gainesville, Florida. Screening tools and surveys for parents will be used to determine the impact of the project of enhancing parental health literacy. Parents will receive colorful key cards to learn of required childhood vaccines.
Keywords: health literacy, homeless health, immunizations, pediatric vaccines, immunization-preventable disease, parental education
Statement of the Problem
Low health literacy in parents generates a knowledge gap regarding childhood vaccines. This gap in knowledge overall impacts pediatric health. Low immunization rates among pediatric population can negatively impact pediatric health, can cause an increase in vaccine preventable diseases, and increase morbidity and mortality rate in children. Parental enhancement in health literacy is crucial for their children’s health and wellness as adults.
Purpose of the Project
The purpose of this quantitative quality improvement project is to determine if the implementation of a health educational resource would impact health outcomes when compared to standard practice among homeless parents that reside in homeless shelters .
Significance of project
The significance of this project is to enhance parental health literacy to prevent vaccine preventable disease in children. This project will provide adults the opportunity to gain educational strategies to reduce exposure to vaccine related illness while residing in a congregate setting. Vaccines provides immunity against childhood diseases and protect youth from suffering from increase morbidity.
