Discuss the ethical implications of one of the recommendations and what it means to the nurse, the patient, the health care environment and system. Also include what ethical principles (i.e., veracity, sanctity of life, beneficence, maleficence, etc.) are at stake and who are the stakeholders. Introduction
Nurses are fundamental members of the healthcare team. Nurses are primarily responsible for providing care to patient’s by managing patient’s "physical needs, prevent[ing] illness, and treat[ing] health conditions" (Smith, 2021). The institute of medicine released a report called the ‘Future of Nursing’ which listed that nurses promote their leadership roles in delivery and development of care. The report suggested several recommendations for nurses to take as an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson foundation. One recommendation from the report suggests "Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. " (Kershaw, 2011). The purpose of this discussion post is to explore the ethical implication, ethical principles, and stakeholders of the above listed recommendation.
Ethical Implication
Ethical implications occur regularly in nursing. An ethical implication can effect the nurse, patient, the healthcare system, and anyone else who may be involved. The recommendation that was listed above by the Institute of Medicine listed above can impose ethical implications. The ethical implication being proposed in this circumstance is that nurses should receive higher education under an educational system that promotes academic advancement. This ethical implication affects the nurse because it is allowing the nurse to gain further education, which then effects the patient and healthcare system. If a nurse has an easier way of gaining education, the nurse is more likely to obtain further education. In this sense, the nurse will become more educated which will help patient safety and the healthcare system overall achieve better patient outcomes.
Ethical Principles
In nursing, there are four main ethical principles. The four main ethical principles include autonomy, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence (Geiger & Haddad, 2020). The recommendation that was listed above by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is a recommendation that breaks the ethical principle of autonomy for the nurse. It should be the nurses decision if she wants to chose to attend school for further education, however, for the patient the promotion of continuing education promotes beneficence and non-maleficence. This is because these principle promote doing good and preventing harm and with more education, the nurse is more knowledgeable of ways to treat the patient (Geiger & Haddad, 2020). The recommendation listed above by the IOM also represents the healthcare system by beneficence and non-maleficence because the healthcare system is able to overall help preventing things like infection and other treatments.
Stakeholders
The stakeholders who are involved in the recommendation by the IOM are the patients, nurses, schools, and healthcare system. The patient’s are involved because they are receiving care from the nurses. The nurses are involved because they are the individuals going for further education. The schools are involved because they are providing the further education for the nurses. The healthcare system is involved because these individuals are employing the nurses with the further education.
Conclusion
The purpose of this discussion post was to explore the ethical implication, ethical principles, and stakeholders of the above listed recommendation. Nurses are valuable resources in the healthcare system and their knowledge not only effects their practice, but the patient and healthcare system conclusively. Nurses gaining education from schools that help the transitional progress can provide more educated nurses and safer patient care.
