According to Mason, Leavitt, and Chaffee (2014), independent groups award accreditation as a sign of approval. To prepare for this discussion, review the purpose and benefits of accreditation by an organization that provides this service in an area of health care in which you have an interest.
For provider organizations, it may be the Joint Commission; for schools, it may be the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing (NLN); and for other service sectors, it may be the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC) or other bodies.
To introduce your discussion, summarize the purpose and benefits of accreditation from your selected accrediting body. Then address the following items:
• Briefly describe accreditation requirements that address quality and quality processes in the organization.
• Describe the contributions of accreditation that regulations may not address.
• Describe the relationship as you see it between regulation and the selected accreditation regarding quality in the organization. Comment on implications for organizations given that regulation is mandatory and accreditation is voluntary.
• Describe what role nurses have, if any, in carrying out the requirements of the accreditation.
