Description: Students will propose a plan aimed at practice improvement in a clinical setting using an evidence-informed, holistic strategy. Consult with your practicum preceptor for ideas, or use this project as an opportunity to improve something in your own work environment.

Guidelines for the Evidence for Holistic Nursing Practice Paper
• The purpose of this Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Project is to use the principles and context of EBP as an approach to evaluate a holistic healing strategy, nursing practice, policy, or procedure in light of current evidence and make recommendations for change/improvement in your practicum or work environment. (Please peruse several Tables of Contents of the Holistic Nursing Practice and the Journal of Holistic Nursing to get ideas as to the variety of holistic strategies available.)
• You will follow the 18-step Johns Hopkins Nursing EBP (JHNEBP) process to fulfill this project.
• Prepare the final project report using the following sections and guidelines, using the bolded headings given to organize the paper.
• Be sure to quickly review Chapter 34 (Holistic Nursing Research) and then focus on Chapter 35 (Evidence Based Practice) in Dossey & Keegan (2013) Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice to prepare for this project. (You used this book in prior coursework).
• The Tables in Chapter 35 will be especially helpful for you! Copy and paste the following link to access the Johns Hopkins Nursing EBP Process pdf document, which will serve as the template for your project (or, simply Google the document):

• Before you begin, quickly read pages 15- 26 and carefully read pages 39-47 in this JHNEBP pdf to get an overall sense of the 18 steps involved in the translation of evidence to practice process.
• Please note that while research is given priority as a source of evidence, the Johns Hopkins model affirms the value of other sources of evidence, and includes processes for evaluating these sources- very important to a holistic process.

• State your PICO question
o Use the Question Development Tool found in Appendix A (page 197) of the JHNEBP document to develop your PICO question
o Pose a specific, focused, answerable question in PICO format (P = patient/population/process/problem of interest; I = an Intervention of interest; C = Comparison with other treatments/approaches; O = Outcomes of interest (see Tables 35-1 and 35-2 in Dossey & Keegan).

• Use Appendix C, to determine the level of evidence, and Appendices F & G to critique reviewed evidence. Note that Appendices F & G address both Research and Non-Research sources of data (evidence). You evaluate them for strength and quality on separate scales!

SUMMARIZE AND RATE STRENGTH OF THE EVIDENCE (JHNEBP Steps 8 and 9) – (20 points)
• Make a determination of whether sufficient evidence exists to support either the status quo/current practice or whether a practice change is warranted.
• In other words, is the evidence strong enough to support a change or would it be better to conduct an actual research study on the issue/topic/problem, or would it be better to stay with current practice (based on the what you discovered in your review and critique of the literature)
