Before you begin writing, be sure to read chapter 5 in The Real World, paying special attention to the topics of bureaucracy, McDonaldization, and the iron law of oligarchy. How did bureaucracy, as a societal practice, come to be? Why did it expand into so many aspects of society? What benefits do bureaucracies provide us? How do bureaucracies hinder us? It is important to understand these concepts to be able to successfully approach this topic. I expect to see these addressed in your essay. What bureaucratic realities can be identified within the issues of the veterans’ backlog? How did the problem get to this point? Who bears the brunt of the incompetence? Where does McDonaldization fit into & help explain this issue? Can a critique of bureaucracy be levied here? Can you identify the benefit of bureaucratic practice after assessing this issue? What about oligarchy? Is the VA an oligarchy? Are the fixes, including privatization of some care, any better? Are they essentially the same? Why or why not? In addition to the concepts listed above, I expect to see an inclusion of theoretical explanation. When considering the theoretical perspective of conflict theory, for example, what explanation or understanding can be provided?
