The years between the 1950s and 1970s could be called the golden age of nursing’s Grand Theories. However, in more recent years, the cutting edge of the nursing ‘academy’ has been concerned with a period of consolidation, reflection and concept development (1986-1990), and the development of mid-range and situation specific theory (1991-1995). This reveals a trend away from grand theories (that should have an answer to everything – including that age old question “What is nursing?”) towards the idea that each situation is (more or less) unique and open to individual interpretation. Carper’s work gave validity to the concept of aesthetics. For this unit, we will move into the present and consider nursing knowledge from a philosophical perspective, that of “Postmodernism”.
