A Personal Statement Paper Author: Tiong Ngo, RN MSN Objectives At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to – 1 Define and explain the impact of personal engagement 2 Engage in positive strategies in advancing role from VN to RN 3 Examine personal and professional selves through reflection 4 Identify both short and long term personal and professional goals 5 Develop a timeline to gauge progress 6 Create an action plan using a nursing theory as guiding principle 7 Write a paper using APA style Discussions All VNRN students in this Transition Course are required to write a personal interest statement paper. The purpose of this paper is to allow you to tell your personal story about your journey in this role transition from VN to RN. It is to track your historical achievement toward becoming a professional registered nurse from the day you start the Transition course to the day you throw hats in the air on your graduation day. The famous Chinese philosopher, Lao Tze, said, The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. By continuing your education in pursuing the RN profession is the first step you have just undertaken. You have shown your commitment to lifelong learning and engagement, where in the end, you will reap your fruits of labor in achieving autonomy, mastery, and purpose in life. Each journey is unique to the traveler. Each road travelled may seem to lead in a never-ending lane of endlessness. The path you just took today in becoming a professional RN can lead to a thousand more, as the process of learning and discovery is not a short one. In a collaborative effort, we want to make sure that your path leads to success. Hence, this paper writing will paint a bigger picture to see where your journey is heading from here. This reflection paper encourages you to find what is meaningful to you, and thus, it adds value to your learning. It is to be written in a few words as much as possible. This principle is called parsimony, which is a two-sided coin less on one side, more on the other. Hence, this paper is no more than 300 words, which is about 2-3 printed pages. Students will use APA style. The title page and reference pages do not \”count\” in this word/page limit, and note that an Abstract is not needed for this brief paper. Students may include their own reflections on motivation, aspirations, expectations, opportunities, and influences, drawn from personal experience(s). Students should also draw upon the chapter readings as assigned (please see below), and conduct an interview with a registered nurse, preferably one with an advanced practice, e.g. Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), and so on. To prepare for this assignment, students will read the textbooks, including the history of the selected role, definition and public expectations, scope, role development, nursing theory, and influences from professional organizations. Student will conduct an interview with an advanced practice nurse. From Lora Claywells book, please read the following chapters: Chapter 1, Honoring Your Past. Planning Your Future, pp1-10 Chapter 6, Distinguishing the RN Role from the LPN/LVN Role, pp79-97 From Potter/Perry book, please read the following chapters: Chapter 1, Nursing Today, pp1-40 Chapter 4, Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice, pp41-51 Your reflection paper should contain the following: Paragraph 1: Introduction why do you want to be a registered nurse? Why choose this route in your journey? Discuss your personal objectives and goal Paragraph 2: What did you learn from the interview with an advanced RN? How does this connect to your objectives/goal? Paragraph 3: Choose a Nursing Theory as a framework to guide your journey Why did you choose this theory? What can you do, as the captain of the ship, to reach your objectives and ultimately your goal with your chosen nursing theory as framework How can this theory help guide you toward your success? Paragraph 4: Discuss your expectations, roadblocks How to balance this so you may succeed? Paragraph 5: Conclusion We will revisit this reflection paper when you reach the end of your RN program, which will likely be in your Leadership course. So, you are required to keep this file for future use when you continue to reflect on your journey as you finish up your RN program. You are to ask yourself if you have achieved your objectives/goals, if the nursing theory you chose have guided your path, and so on. Due date for this paper is to be determined.
