Nursing Research Utilization Project Proposal
Research Utilization Proposal
Problem Statement:
Long Island Regional Psychiatric Center, a 300 bed psychiatric center, has an increase upper respiratory infection of 25% from last year.
Respiratory tract infection remains among the most common type of infections in the society. In particular, upper respiratory infection accounts for majority visits to
doctors among members of our society. As a cause for concern on the quality of care services offered by psychiatric centers, records have it that upper respiratory
infection is among the leading form of outbreaks affecting psychiatric centers in our society (Muller & Detsky, 2010).
Of particular concern, upper respiratory infection outbreaks in psychiatric centers are associated with eminent poor commitment by staff and healthcare facilities to
infection control procedures in psychiatric centers (Ambulatory Quality & Compliance Insider, 2010).
The rationale of consideration a research on the subject of increased upper respiratory infection rates at Long Island Regional Psychiatric Center is founded on the
fact that such an incident not only negate the very purpose of the center as a facility for sustaining health wellbeing among its clients but also that such remains a
cause of undue costs in the center (Sax et al., 2007).
Project Objective: The aim of this project is to examine the underlying causes and risk factors behind increase in upper respiratory infection incidents at the Long
Island Regional Psychiatric Center and propose possible solution to the problem.
Solution Statement: Long Island Regional Psychiatric Center should implement evidence practices for reduction of infections by improving hand hygiene.
Hand hygiene remains the most common cause of preventable incidents of infectious outbreaks in healthcare facilities. In particular, efforts to ensure compliance to
hand hygiene procedures by members of staff in healthcare facilities remain a major concern among infection preventionist (IP) (Ott & French, 2009; Allegranzi et
al., 2009). True to the letter, available statistical evidence on compliance to hand hygiene provisions among staff in healthcare facilities indicates that the level
of compliance various not only from facility to facility but also between various units in the same healthcare facility (Goldmann, 2006).
The choice of hand hygiene as a suitable solution to the problem at hand is the fact that the issue of upper respiratory infection remains subject to some extent on
the effectiveness hand hygiene practices in healthcare facilities. In addition, the choice of the proposed solution is based on the evident presence of advanced
systems for monitoring compliance with hand hygiene procedures in healthcare facilities (Charlotte, 2014).
