?Baptist Hospital of Miami is a not-for-profit health care provider operated by Baptist Health South Florida whose primary objective is to help families with connections to access and knowledge concerning disease preventions, lifestyle, as well as physician-directed care. Its mission centers on the provision of high-quality, cost ?effective, compassionate health care services and promotion of quality life for all families within their area of operation (Baptist Health South Florida, 2016). Baptist Hospital is a 728-bed facility founded in 1960, and it is the eleventh hospital in the United States that earned the ?Magnet? of excellence in nursing. According to the results of the latest survey, more than 34,000 people are hospitalized each year; about 113,000 receive emergency care in the Emergency Center, and more than 6,000 outpatient surgeries are done. (Baptist Health South Florida, 2016)The hospital offers various services comprising of oncology services, physical and medical rehabilitation, home health care, child protective services, clinical trials, internal medicine, laboratory services, pharmacy, pediatrics, just to name a few. Baptist Hospital provides advanced treatment for patients with all types of cancer through a multidisciplinary care that includes medical, surgical and radiation oncology, diagnostic and support services. (Baptist Health South Florida, 2016).
Family nurse practitioners play a crucial role in the treatment and management of cancer patients. Nurse navigator works in the clinical cancer team to help in the coordination, negotiation, provision of procedural services, and assistance in the management of the complex oncology patients for better and quality service. The nurses help patients throughout the care continuum ensuring proper acute, and supportive medication and attention are provided to the patients in a consistent and timely manner (Baptist Health South Florida, 2016). They also ensure the patients actively participate during the decision-making process about their care. The roles of the nurse navigator squarely fit the roles of a family nurse-physician.
It is undeniable that the hospital has a considerable number of family nurses due to the nature of the services it provides. The hospital thrives on its multidisciplinary qualities and its commitment to the provision of quality services to its patients. It requires practitioners who have advanced clinical skills with extensive educational, rehabilitative, and supportive knowledge that meets the hospital’s programs (Baptist Health South Florida, 2016).
Surgical operations are a practice that is exempted rather has limited approval as one of the duties of nurses. However, Britt (2012) argues that due to the heavy patient load always on the hand of doctors creating a shortage of the primary care physicians, there is substantial need to incorporate nursing practitioners and physician assistants to fill in some of the needs of the primary care. Baptist Hospital being is centered on cancer treatment and other surgical operations; it can get help from the nurse practitioners in the surgical department. The nurses are capable of performing minor surgeries and procedures, reducing the pressure on the doctors. As a new Family Nurse Practitioner in the hospital, my scope of practice will include doing these minor surgeries or procedures and help that the doctors have ample time to deal with the major cases hence enhancing quality, consistency and timely treatment (Blair & Michaelene, 2015). Also, I can provide assistance in the diagnostic, treatment and education of the patient diagnosed with cancer and offer support during their transition to the health system?
-Determine your leadership style (http://psychology.about.com/library/quiz/bl-leadershipquiz.htm). ? Democratic
?According to the Quiz: What?s your leadership style? (About.com Psychology, n.d.) , I observed that my style of leadership is the democratic style. Democratic leadership is a style of leadership where the leader and the followers all have equal opportunities to state what they would like to be done, without the leader having to dictate what the group has to do or otherwise (McSherry et.al, 2010). Though the final say still remains with the leader, the followers are the ones that would determine this final say by the leader. Due to its nature that demands that everyone within a group participates in the decision making and problem solving, this style of leadership is also known as participative leadership. Democratic leadership gives an opportunity for all team players to get involved in and engage themselves in the issues that affect the team. They do not have to leave everything to a selected few members of the group to handle. This way they would feel like equal partners and their presence and participation required in the team. Each member will have their suggestions in whatever matter, and it would be considered in the decision making and problem solving.
I feel that this is my kind of leadership style because everything that describes Democratic leadership directly describes my relationship with the people that I lead. I love to let my followers realize that their presence and participation in the decision making and problem solving initiatives within the group are acknowledged and welcome. I love seeing their spirits high after helping out in an issue. The more they get involved in any activity that affects that group, the more their morale is boosted and they feel wanted in the team. I love seeing them exchanging ideas among themselves and coming to conclusions which they ultimately present to me for approval. This even makes my work less difficult and more enjoyable because if there would any changes that I would have to make about the decision reached, then they would be minor.
I believe in democratic leadership because it influences the members of the group to embrace team work and work together in harmony. It fosters co-operation between the members of the team and helps them bond together and become a formidable force. The leader guides the members and offers them help wherever necessary. Otherwise, they are free to come up with their own decisions that they would feel are for the general good of the group. I believe in this style of leadership because it helps to create equality within the group and no single member would feel more special or important than the rest of the team members. The members are allowed to exchange their thoughts with liberty, and the leader?s role would be to bring the discussion of ordering whenever things get out of hand or when the debate becomes so heated.
-Identify leadership attributes you currently possess, and attributes you may need to develop.
?Personal Leadership Attributes:
My leadership qualities are very applicable in the nursing field. Among the qualities that I possess include my ability to view people?s situations from their own points of view. I realize that everyone is a human being, and all people are prone to have their own standpoints on anything. Therefore I view my empathy as being very helpful in situations when there is a conflict one of the nurses and a patient or between fellow nurses. I let each explain their feelings and finish whatever they have to say and look at it from their own perspective. I do not ignore any of their arguments. I also am very slow at coming to a conclusion before I hear both sides of a story and analyze both parties.
However, for me to be an even better leader in my nursing profession, there are some areas in my personal attributes that I have to improve on. The most important one is that I have to improve on my sociability with strangers. I am normally withdrawn when meeting strangers, and this has cost me that I lead some opportunities and deals in the past. Nevertheless, the kind of democratic leadership that I portray is exceptional and has been appreciated by every member of my department. ..
