Effective practice in a toddler setting requires teachers’ intentional actions and behaviors, with the goal of bringing about positive outcomes for toddlers.
However, effective practice is not a “one size fits all” approach. There are many different ways in which teachers can work with children in order to foster optimal growth and learning. At the core, though, effective practice is developmentally appropriate, individually appropriate, and culturally appropriate. That is, teachers’ actions are informed by knowledge of toddler development, based on firsthand familiarity with each child’s needs and preferences, and sensitive and responsive to each child’s culture.
In the media program “Effective Practice,” you saw a demonstration of some of the ways one toddler setting promotes healthy development and learning.
