Purpose:
Nurses in clinical practice are expected to perform and be competent in a range of nursing skills. Every area of clinical practice that involves the implementation of nursing skills, from direct patient care to patient assessment is classified as nursing management.
The nursing profession must regularly update and adapt their practices. This is what is known as best practice. This term refers to clinical practice treatments and nursing based interventions that result in improved patient outcomes. The purpose of this essay is to introduce students to the concept of best practice principles and how nursing research is incorporated into the clinical environment.
Description:
Students will be required to integrate theory and practice together to present an essay relating to the nursing management of a patient. The nursing management can relate to any area of nursing practice including: acute care, aged care, mental health and community based care. Students will be expected to present a logical and analytical argument, using best practice guidelines and current literature (see marking guide), in an essay format, to support the nursing management of a patient in relation to a specific area of clinical practice.
Examples of nursing management that could be discussed include intravenous therapy, indwelling catheter management, nasogastric tube management, neurological assessment, pre-operative management, post-operative management, etc.
Remember: the essay is in relation to NURSING MANAGEMENT and not medical management or pharmacological management. Even though these elements are part of the collaborative approach to providing evidenced based care they should not be the focus of the essay.

? The essay needs to be focused on an area of nursing management. Do not make the topic too broad. Try and be as specific as possible. Also do not just describe the nursing management. You need to analyse the information and research. It may even be that there is not adequate research to support current practice and therefore your essay should discuss this.
