EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE ARTICLE:
SUMMARY OVERVIEW AND RUBRIC
OVERVIEW: The most common definition of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is from
former US Surgeon General David Sackett MD. EBP is “the conscientious, explicit and
judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual
patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external
clinical evidence from systematic research.†(Reid et al, 2017)
EBP is the integration of clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence
into the decision making process for patient care. Clinical expertise refers to the
accumulated experience, education, and clinical skills of the clinician. The patient brings to
the encounter personal preferences and unique concerns, expectations, and values. The
best research evidence is usually found in clinically relevant research that has been
conducted using sound methodology. (Sackett D, 2002)
The evidence, by itself, does not make the decision but can serve to support the patient
care process. The full integration of these three components into clinical decisions
enhances the opportunity for optimal clinical outcomes and quality of life. The practice of
EBP is usually triggered by patient encounters that generate questions about the effects of
therapy, the utility of diagnostic tests, the prognosis of diseases, and/or etiology of
disorders.
EBP requires new skills of the clinician, including efficient literature searching, and the
application of formal rules of evidence in evaluating the scientific literature

Psychopharmacology evidenced-based article and written prescription
YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Choose an evidence-based article on a psychopharmacology
modality. Summarize the article in your own words, make a determination about how
“valuable” the evidence is, and describe how you would use it in your practice. Give
examples to support your discussion. The student will also write a sample prescription on a
blank piece of paper of the starting dose for the chosen medication to submit with the
written review. The assignment will be reviewed through Turnitin when submitting the
assignment. The originality score should be less than 10%.
Upload the journal article (not your written review) in the designated discussion area.
RUBRIC: Grading is based on three parts of the following:
Choose an appropriate article with an adequate description of the validity of the
evidence, based upon approved evidence grading criteria and supporting examples from
the article; adequate description of applicability to advanced practice with supporting
examples using APA format
Using a blank piece of paper, create a sample prescription of the medication utilizing
DEA criteria for prescriptions, sign your name and PMHNP student
Submit a copy of an appropriate published article that you are discussing in the
discussion area
