Nursing Responsibilities

1. Nursing Responsibilities. Provide a short overview of your daily nursing responsibilities in delivering holistic, patient-centered care according to the unit/department policies and guidelines. (Med-surge unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Florida)

2. Nursing Process. Explain how you have utilized the nursing process to deliver safe and quality care to your patients. Provide examples of assessment findings, nursing diagnosis, individualized plan of care, nursing interventions and evaluation of patient outcomes. In addition, provide examples of how you have prioritized patient care throughout the shift and how you made those decisions.

3. Delegation of Care. Explain how you have utilized the nursing process to delegate care and to supervise members of the healthcare team according to level of competence, scope of practice, agency policies and the Nurse Practice Act regulations. What were the results and what would you do different next time?

Entry#2: Topics 4, 5, and 6
4. Critical Thinking. Explain how you have utilized critical thinking to prioritize care for a patient or a group of patients with complex disorders.

5. Communication Skills. Describe how you have utilized appropriate communication skills as a nurse leader and manager with patients, families, co-workers, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.

6. Patient and Family Education Provide examples of strategies that you have utilized to provide patient/family education. What was the outcome?

Entry#3: Topics 7, 8, and 9
7. Inter-professional Approach for Discharge Planning. Provide examples of an inter-professional approach that you have utilized to plan or to change a patient’s discharge plan. What was the outcome?

8. Evidence-Based Practice. Describe situations when you have utilized nursing evidence-based practice to monitor continuous quality improvement and safety. What was the outcome?

9. Conflict Management. Provide examples of appropriate conflict management techniques that you have utilized in the clinical setting to foster collaboration and teamwork. What was the outcome?

Entry#4: Topics 10, 11, and 12
10. Contemporary Nursing Trends. Provide examples of how you have integrated contemporary nursing trends (informatics, global health, cultural diversity, nursing shortage, health literacy, and cultural diversity, etc.) to analyze individual patient care situation.

11. Learning Experiences. List at least 5 learning experiences and identify one that had the greatest impact on your nursing practice.

12. Summary of Progress. Provide a summary of your progress in meeting all of the course objectives, and list the objectives you still need to meet or need to continue to develop.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This seminar/practicum course synthesizes all previous knowledge as a foundation for implementing holistic, patient-centered care that reflects an understanding of human growth and development, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical and nursing management. Students will provide competent, compassionate care to diverse patient and family populations across the health illness continuum, across the lifespan, and in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will incorporate current evidence-based research in delivering safe, quality patient care. The student will work with a registered nurse preceptor and apply leadership skills in delegating, supervising, and collaborating with other members of the interprofessional healthcare team. Students will demonstrate stewardship and integrity when providing patient care in this dynamic healthcare environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Implement holistic, patient-centered care that reflects an understanding of human growth and development, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical management, and nursing management across the health-illness continuum, across the lifespan, and in all healthcare settings.
2. Communicate effectively with members of the interprofessional healthcare team, ensuring a smooth transition of care for the patient and the patient’s support network.
3. Apply appropriate conflict management strategies in the healthcare setting.
4. Deliver safe, quality, compassionate, and competent patient-centered care that incorporate evidence-based practice and respect for patient and family preferences.
5. Provide appropriate patient teaching that reflects developmental stage, age, culture, spirituality, patient preferences, and health literacy considerations to foster patient engagement in their care.
6. Implement evidence-based nursing interventions in prioritizing, delegating, and managing the acute and chronic care of patients reflective of a beginning practitioner’s workload.
7. Monitor patient outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
8. Revise the plan of care based on an ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes.
9. Demonstrate clinical/critical reasoning, accountability, and stewardship that promote positive patient outcomes when delegating to members of the healthcare team.
10. Demonstrate accountability for personal and professional behaviors, with a specific focus on the transition from student to graduate nurse.
