Hawaii is a constituent of Polynesia Islands discovered by explorer James Cook in 1778 while on expedition. Polynesia; meaning many Islands is one the three major Islands; Melanesia and Micronesia that make up the Pacific Islands. Hawaii is the biggest Polynesia Island of eight major Islands formally known as. The Sandwich Islands by James Cook. The other seven major Islands collectively called Hawaii in descending order according to area per kilometre squared are: Maui, O’ahu, Kaua’I, Moloka’I, Lana’i, Ni’ihau and Kaho’olawe. Hawaii sits largely on central areas of extinct volcanos although some parts of the Islands suffer from dormant and active Volcanos creating rugged terrain hence people live on mountain slopes. As such, it is prone to earthquakes and Tsunamis.
The climate is generally tropical with many changes due to constant changing altitude and weather. In 1959 Hawaii became a state of the United States of America and it is the only state made of Islands. Before westernization, habitats of these Islands were identified with their clans or tribe and all shared the same Asian believe of importance of their society over that of an individual. However, after James Cook documented his findings the island suffered an influx of immigrants and since then it is difficult to identify a fully blooded Hawaiian. Immigrants exposed the native Hawaiians with western diseases like measles and chicken pox which they had no immunity to, causing many deaths and threatening the population to be extinct (Wergowske, n.d).
Richard C. Lim, the Director of Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism in Hawaii stated that Hawaii’s total population was at 1,360,301 in 2010. Further demographic analysis based on elements of culture identified the uniqueness in the diversity of the Hawaiian culture. Only 5.9% of the total population make up for Native Hawaiians and the rest is shared among Asians 38.6%, Chinese 4%, Korean 1.8%, Vietnamese 0.7%, Filipino 14.5% and Black or African American 1.6% and White 24.7% making it the only state of America with fewer Whites than other races. Two Languages are identified as the main languages i.e Hawaiian and English. Recent achievements by Hawaiian natives have made many residents claim to be Hawaiian by blood encouraging Hawaiian cultural practises.
Hawaiian people believe in the power of nature and many are Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists and many other religions. However, some traditional practises such as offerings to Pele are still practised as people tend to express and share pride in their ancestral origins. The contemporary society borrows the term Ohana from the traditional practises to mean family. Family is the key unit of a community. Members of Ohano would be related by blood or simply be people from outside but accepted by the family. The health of Ohano as a whole is more important than that of an individual. Tattooing is very common within the Hawaiian culture as it is symbolic of belonging to a group. The older provide for the young and pass education to them. The young respect their elders and decision making is entirely from their elders. Such closeness prohibits direct communication on negative personal feelings and external expression is likely to anger a member of the Ohano.
