Please review the following scenario.

A Community College is one of two post-secondary institutions located in a small city with a largely working-class population of 39,000. One 150-bed general hospital, a 98-bed residential care facility, and two health clinics provide services to the community. The College offers one- and two-year certificate and associate degree (AD) programs during the day, evening, and weekend hours. Approximately 6,400 full- and part-time students are enrolled in technology and health-related programs.

The associate-degree nursing (ADN) program is open to applicants who qualify after completing a high school diploma. It was introduced in 1976 and has since graduated more than 1,600 nurses. A 78 percent success rate on first-time attempts at NCLEX in the early years has increased to 92 percent.

The ADN curriculum has undergone several successful changes in keeping with new approaches in nursing education and practice, as reflected in the increased number of graduates passing the NCLEX. The chair of the nursing department has been meeting for several months with the nursing faculty and the curriculum committee to discuss changes to the curriculum. They have been reviewing environmental, socio-economic, cultural, professional, and institutional factors related to the college, community, and the ADN program. As well, they have been working at differentiating curriculum outcomes from curriculum goals, since they want to change their statements to be congruent with more recent thinking in nursing education. Current curriculum development activity is focused on philosophical and educational approaches.

They have already determined that apprenticeship, or cognitive apprenticeship, philosophical approaches would be suitable. They have drafted an updated, all-encompassing purpose for the program: to prepare students to provide safe, ethical, culturally-sensitive nursing practice, in collaboration with other healthcare providers, to individuals, families, and communities. The intent now is to articulate more specifically intended curriculum outcomes.

Choose 3 of the following questions to answer:

-What philosophical assumptions or statements can be derived from the apprenticeship or cognitive apprenticeship approaches?
-How will these assumptions or statements guide the curriculum?
-What effect will the philosophical approaches have on the philosophical and educational approach statements?
-What must the curriculum committee do in order to formalize the philosophical and educational approach statements?
-Describe the process of developing philosophical and educational approach statements from the core curriculum concepts.
-How can a description of the apprenticeship or cognitive apprenticeship philosophical approaches for the ADN curriculum be formulated?
-How can the ADN curriculum outcomes based on an apprenticeship or cognitive apprenticeship philosophical approaches be formulated?
