our Speaker Notes offer a good start to explaining why the humanities are important to society, but there are gaps in clarity, detail, or support. To improve your work for your presentation, consider the importance of the humanities in society and how the humanities can inform and impact us. For example, what do you think the humanities can tell us about our own culture and experiences? How are your own personal and professional experiences better understood through the humanities? Look back to your Exploration Document for some examples of what you learned about your artifacts and theme and the impact of these on people and society. What does a study of your theme and its expression in your artifacts reveal about people’s experiences? How could this enrich or help society? For instance, a student who studied the theme of “helping people heal” and military memorials as their artifacts might identify the importance of the humanities in helping service members and their families rebuild their relationships, reestablish themselves in society, and practice self-empathy to honor their experiences and narratives as part of the healing process. Be sure to revisit the sample response on page 7.2.2, which explores human relationships, traditions, and courage. Let me know if I can help.

The Project Part Two requires you to take ideas from the Project Part 1 and to add to those ideas some illustrations and ideas in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. This means that you shouldn’t ignore Project Part 1 you completed for Week 6. Be sure to incorporate the notes you made for the Project Part 1 as Notes in the PowerPoint you design for the Project Part 2. If you don’t, the images you include won’t make sense.

The first step in developing part one of your course project is to identify the two artifacts you want to compare, a theme that is common to both artifacts, and how that theme relates to your personal experience. In this course we use the phrase “cultural artifact” to refer to anything with an artistic dimension that was created by humans. This could be a painting, a short story, or a song, among other things. A humanities resource is any credible article, lecture, or book about the cultural artifacts, artists, or themes you are investigating. Artifacts may take the form of any artistic medium, such as literature, poetry, music, film, ballet, painting, or sculpture. You can also look to any other discipline in the humanities, such as film, television, social media, religion, history, philosophy, theater, etc. I encourage you to work with a peer tutor if you feel you may need an extra boost with your project.
