FOR THE DISCUSSION IT ORIGINALLY SAID:
Think about your experiences with the healthcare system, an experience a friend or family member has talked with you about, or a story you recently heard or read in the news. Discuss an ethical or legal situation involving healthcare from the perspective of either cultural differences, LGBTQ+ rights, quality, safety, economic differences, religious differences, etc. Address the following:
1. What about that situation stands out to you? Were you or that person treated fairly? Why or why not?
2. What was the outcome?
3. What, if anything, could have been done differently to improve the situation and/or the outcome?
Reflect on how this experience influenced your perception of healthcare providers or the healthcare system.
I HAVE PUT WHAT I SAID FOR THE DISCUSSION IN THE FILES
NOW I HAVE TO RESPOND TO A PEER:
It is very important to both answer ALL OF the question(s)posted in the discussion topic (there are generally multiple questions/points to address in each) AND formulate a thoughtful response to your classmates’ postings. Responding with "Good post" is not a thoughtful reply. Points will be deducted if you do not respond thoughtfully to at least two of your classmates
Write a post of 1 to 2 paragraphs.
Demonstrate more depth and thought than saying things like “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in the discussion prompt
THE PEER SAID:
Hi, my name is Valena, I am currently studying to for my bachelor’s degree in HealthCare Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Information Management. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and I am a supervisor in the revenue cycle department for a major hospital here. I have worked in healthcare administration for a long time and I feel that by obtaining a degree in my field, would open the door to more opportunities for me.
Since I work in the revenue cycle department of the hospital I deal with a lot of uninsured patients. One group in particular is the Amish community, historically due to their religious beliefs and culture the Amish do not believe in relying on the government and/ or insurance. So when they are faced will an outstanding bill and in need of financial counseling I am met with an obstacle, since my resources to offer are limited and usually consist of government outside resources such as the hospitals’ financial assistance program, Medicaid or Medicare which are all funded by the government. I find that at the slightest mention of these options they would become uncomfortable.
The hospital has established Amish pay plans where they would receive 30-50% off their balance with the ability to be placed on a payment plan I feel this is fair because insured patients receive services at a discounted, contracted rate and most of the time we are able to get a payment.
Cultural differences play a significant role in shaping healthcare practices and decision-making. One ethical situation that can arise due to cultural differences is the issue of cultural competence and respectful care.
In a diverse society, healthcare providers encounter patients from various cultural backgrounds. Each culture has its own beliefs, values, and practices related to health and illness. The challenge arises when these cultural beliefs clash with established medical practices or ethical guidelines.
Cultural competence refers to the ability of healthcare professionals to understand and respect different cultural perspectives while providing equitable and effective care. It involves acknowledging and addressing cultural biases, stereotypes, and barriers to healthcare access.
To navigate this situation, healthcare providers should strive to:
Cultivate cultural awareness: Healthcare professionals must educate themselves about the cultural beliefs, practices, and health-seeking behaviors of the diverse patient populations they serve. This knowledge can help them understand the context in which healthcare decisions are made.
Engage in effective communication: Building trust and rapport with patients from different cultures requires effective communication. Healthcare providers should use culturally sensitive language, actively listen, and ask open-ended questions to understand the patient’s perspective fully.
Adapt care plans: Healthcare professionals should be flexible in tailoring care plans to align with the patient’s cultural beliefs, as long as those beliefs do not compromise patient safety or go against ethical guidelines. This may involve collaborating with traditional healers, incorporating alternative therapies, or adjusting treatment approaches.
Seek guidance and consultation: When faced with complex ethical situations involving cultural differences, healthcare providers can consult with cultural experts, ethicists, or colleagues who have experience in cross-cultural healthcare. This collaboration can help in finding solutions that respect both the patient’s cultural values and the principles of modern healthcare.
PLEASE RESPOND THOUGHTFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY.
