FOR THE DISCUSSION IT ORIGINALLY SAID:
Think about your experiences with the healthcare system, an experience a friend or family member has talked with you about, or a story you recently heard or read in the news. Discuss an ethical or legal situation involving healthcare from the perspective of either cultural differences, LGBTQ+ rights, quality, safety, economic differences, religious differences, etc. Address the following:
1. What about that situation stands out to you? Were you or that person treated fairly? Why or why not?
2. What was the outcome?
3. What, if anything, could have been done differently to improve the situation and/or the outcome?
Reflect on how this experience influenced your perception of healthcare providers or the healthcare system.
I HAVE PUT WHAT I SAID FOR THE DISCUSSION IN THE FILES ( IF THAT HELPS)
NOW I HAVE TO RESPOND TO A PEER:
It is very important to both answer ALL OF the question(s)posted in the discussion topic (there are generally multiple questions/points to address in each) AND formulate a thoughtful response to your classmates’ postings. Responding with "Good post" is not a thoughtful reply. Points will be deducted if you do not respond thoughtfully to at least two of your classmates
Write a post of 1 to 2 paragraphs.
Demonstrate more depth and thought than saying things like I agree or You are wrong. Guidance is provided for you in the discussion prompt
THE PEER SAID:
Recently, a friend shared a troubling experience within the healthcare system, highlighting cultural differences. Her elderly mother, an immigrant with limited English proficiency, faced challenges in effective communication with healthcare providers. Despite the hospital’s awareness of her language barrier, there was a lack of cultural sensitivity in explaining her diagnosis and treatment options. It compromised her understanding and ability to make informed decisions.
Communication access was unequal. I noticed this as the patient had difficulty understanding the doctor and asked for a translation. I could see how this hurt fairness. The result was not as close to the optimal goal as possible. The patient was still confused and may not be compliant with her prescribed care. The helping factors might be better translation services or culturally competent communication strategies. The result may have been closer to the optimal if that could have been done. The factors that hurt were cultural competency and lack of translation services. The scale tipping was due to plenty of communication. The situation forced me to compromise.
There were significant lessons I learned from this experience, and they have positively contributed to me as a healthcare provider to bridge the cultural gap, better communicate, establish trust and understanding, and have a different view of the world, which stresses the importance of cultural competence as a healthcare professional to provide equitable and compassionate care.
PLEASE RESPOND THOUGHTFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY.
(if references are needed add them but I don’t think they will be since this is someones personal experience)
