In reviewing the literature, I have noticed that there is minimal evidence on burnout in nurses who care for specific types of populations. This may include communities of a high percentage of overweight and obese patients, geriatric patients, psychiatric patients with minimal access to appropriate psychiatric care, a large homeless population, and areas exposed to extreme levels of violence such as gang or substance related violence. This can lead other researchers to focus on supports for nurses in highly specific environments. Each patient population presents a unique set of challenges that may not be as applicable in other populations. When this research is conducted in the future, the research questions elements- clear, focused, concise, complex, and arguable- can be tailored to fill the gaps by focusing on a specific population (The Writing Center, 2018).
