In summary, the focus of this work is data extraction. You have undertaken your search for evidence (please watch the Webinar on literature searching using a PICO (T) question from the DCU Nursing Librarian which I furnished). You now need to appraise the material you have collected and decide which pieces are helpful to you in your practice and to answer your question. You are required to populate a synthesis /evaluationtable and accompanying worksheet (Larabee 2009) andsubmit it to Dr. Therese Leufer no later than Sunday 28th October. The following gives more detail about this activity.
Using the critical appraisal tools used in class this week (as your guide) you should examine the evidence that you have collected in order to determine if it is helpful to answer your practice related question. The checklists are designed to make your appraisal a speedy process allowing you to summarise & document the outcome of your search relatively quicklyon the evaluation/synthesis table. Chapter 4, 5 & 6 ‘Critically Appraising Evidence’ of the core text will prove helpful reading. Levels of evidence are also discussed within these chapters; you will need to identify the level of evidence of your literature for your final assignment.
Keep in mind that your PICO(T) question that drove your search may not exactly match what has been studied (e.g., the outcome may be slightly different; the population may be different). It is important to determine if the information you have retrieved from the search is usable for your situation. Clinical expertise is important to the outcome of this step.
Enter “keeper” studies (the ones that you believe are useful/helpful) intothe Synthesis/Evaluation table & associated worksheet provided (Larabee 2009).
Using the ‘Synthesis worksheet’ (Larabee 2009) prepare brief overview /summary of what the literature you have identified tells you. How/why do you feel the literature collected will be useful to answer your PICO question? The ‘Synthesis WORKSHEET’(Larabee 2009)will assist you to communicate to the reader “what you know”, if the evidence supports/contradicts and what gaps if any might exist. This will either directly or indirectly answer your question.
