Dimensional view of field of human experience with the Nagel’s Views
This is essay from Thomas Nagel’s book Mind & Cosmos
From your analysis of unfolding news events, you will follow one trajectory and
collect online articles to use as sources for your Documented Journalism Essay.
This is a fertile time to find news articles about all of the major issues of concern
in our current public discourse. Look to the printed media coverage of topical
news events: the news articles from the Opinion section of the NY Times
(nytimes.com) including the editorials and journalist columns as well as the news
stories in the newspaper. As they have been covering these issues of the day,
you need to follow one of these major topics of choice.
What is the issue? What factual information was given in the articles? What
analyses are provided by the news editorials, and the positions taken by news
journalists in their columns and especially in the daily Opinion section and in The
Review section in the Sunday NY Times. You may focus on a particular field of
interest such as: International or U.S. news, Politics, Business, Science, and Health.
Look at the Review section in the NY Times Sunday paper. Look at the Times
Topics which is under the Opinion section for back articles on your topic and
archival links. Some stories may need background information. However, don’t
go too far back in time. Use only what you need to explain the background that
informs this current situation from the news event.
What inciting incident or incidents prompted the discourse around this current
issue? What information still remains sketchy?
What are the buzzwords, or conceptual metaphors that might be associated with
the current discourse? How are these words being used?
Finally, what is your educated opinion (your point of view), after having read
and studied your issue?
Format: The essay assignment must be approximately 8 pages long (2000
