“A systematic review of teamwork in the intensive care unit: What do we know about teamwork, team tasks, and improvement strategies?” was a great article to discuss collaboration. It uses mixed methods for research. The article discusses the pros and cons of teamwork while giving measurements of outcomes. It evaluates team work between the whole group including physicians, clinicians and nursing. It discussed errors that may occur with verbal communication among nurses and physicians. It goes in depth on what aspects of teamwork are most effective in intensive care unit (ICU) related to patient outcomes.
As a new nursing graduate, starting in the ICU of one of the largest hospitals in the city, collaboration within multidisciplinary team made it possible to be successful. The benefits of working at a teaching hospital have strengthened my skills, competence and knowledge. Residents, interns and medical students are constantly bringing in new knowledge and sharing it amongst staff. In my experience nursing can offer a learning opportunity for them as well. Everyday rounds are done at the bedside with patient, nursing and primary care team. It becomes a great opportunity to collaborate plans of care for patient and management. Patient rounds are also done every day in the unit’s conference room with case management, charge nurse, primary team, dietician and physical therapy. It is an opportunity to focus on individualized goals of care for patients. Collaboration among various professionals including dietician, case management, respiratory therapist, physical therapy and occupational therapy is essential for patient care in the ICU. It allows discussion of goals of care for patients as a “whole”, which is critical for the well-being of the patient.
As nurses it is important to collaborate with other nurses. We can offer growth to all staff if we share knowledge. I know that I am the nurse today because of those who came before me and shared their skills. Empathy is probably one of the most important things we can share. It is amazing to me how some staff can just focus on the life style and habits without taking in consideration of who the patient is as an individual.

The article I read was on collaboration and Communication.
What is Collaboration?
Attributes identified by several nurse authors include sharing of planning, making decisions, solving problems, setting goals, assuming responsibility, working together cooperatively, communicating, and coordinating openly (Baggs & Schmitt, 1988)
The article discussed the importance of teamwork as an important model for delivering healthcare to patients. They discussed Integrating services among health care providers as a key to success, they also discussed making decisions as a unit for a common goal as well as having a clear purpose and implement protocols and procedures, one of the key factors was that teamwork reduces errors and has better outcomes for patients. The main back stay of the article above all else was communication must be clear, concise and continuous.
For me as a fairly new nurse this is core nursing for me. As a new grad nurse in a busy ER I can say without the teamwork from my co-workers and Dr’s I’m not sure I would be a nurse still today. The overwhelming anxiety and complexity of some of the cases we see, I can say without a doubt I would have been overwhelmed and missed something or not have know something that could have changed the outcome of the situation. Even with 4 years of ER and nursing under my belt i still miss things , that’s why teamwork and communication among my peers is so important. The article touched on the fact that teamwork helps reduce errors, I feel as for me this is a real , true to life statement, I am very thankful for my ER team that I am very fortunate to work with such great nurses and Dr’s who understand what communication and teamwork truly mean.
