Introduction
In Trinidad and Tobago the population is at risk for various diseases. These high risk populations include Gestational diabetes and Tuberculosis, of which clients are screened for. Within this activity several individuals were screened for either one of these at two different clinics. The first screening test took place when I joined the registered nurses at the Adult chest clinic at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), while for the second set of screening test I joined the other nurses/ midwives at the Mount Hope Women’s’ Hospital (MHWH) Antenatal Clinic.
According to Jovanovic (2015) Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition that develops during pregnancy when the body is not able to make enough insulin. It is important to treat or manager GDM immediately as to prevent any complications from occurring with the mother or the unborn child (Jovanovic, 2015). The author further states that Gestational diabetes affects between 2 and 10 percent of women during pregnancy.
Screening for gestational diabetes is usually done between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. However, if the expecting mother has risk factors for gestational diabetes, such as: a history of gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy; obesity; glucose (sugar) in your urine and a strong family history of diabetes screening may be done earlier. Questions were asked to the client to find out if they were at risk for GDM.
