This problem is especially critical in the case of nurses working in the primary care unit, as it results in a notable decrease in the quality of care given to the patient. The reduced quality of the primary care service has the inconvenient that it increases the demand for specialized care, escalating the problem further. Faced with this shortage, federally qualified health centers provided essential primary care, ensuring that about 24 million American citizens have access to comprehensive primary care that contributes to improving their health and wellbeing (Xue et al., 2018). The investment in such programs, however, required a fund of over $11 billion to the healthcare system, illustrating the importance of developing methods through which to address the issue of primary care shortage in a cost-effective manner (Xue et al., 2018). PICOT statement The project will address the above problem statement by analyzing the effectiveness of a program to alleviate the primary care shortage in the community. Finding the best solution to this problem requires answering the following questions: – How do socioeconomic factors contribute to aggravating the issue of primary care shortage? – How do demographic factors (e.g., the age of the people living in the community) impact the primary care shortage? – Which is the most effective method to address primary care shortage based on the existing, proven evidence? The proposed PICOT statement to the above problem would be as follows: SOLUTION TO THE PRIMARY CARE SHORTAGE – Population: Primary care units – Intervention and indicators: The proposed intervention is to increase the number of 3 nurses working in the primary care units by reallocating those working in the internal medicine residency as they have the necessary skills and knowledge to accomplish the roles of a primary care nurse (Xue et al., 2018). The first indicator is the relation between the number of patients in primary care and the number of primary care nurses working in the healthcare institutions in the area of coverage of the community. The second indicator is the quality of the primary care given to the patient, measured as a function of the patient satisfaction – Controls: Retrospective comparison between the current situation and after six months to observe if there has been an improvement in the quality of care given by the primary nurses through the reduced nursing shortage issue in the community (Xue et al., 2018). – Outcome: Improved quality of the primary care provided to the patients and reduced derivation of the patients to a specialistic visit unless strictly necessary as per the health status of the patient. – Time frame: 6 months.
