What is meant by ‘access and equity’ and ‘consumer participation’ in relation to healthcare?

In 1978, the World Health Organization (WHO), in the Declaration of Alma-Ata, declared that “The people have the right and duty to participate individually and collectively in the planning and implementation of their health care.” (International Conference on Primary Health Care, 1978, para 3) There has been a significant commitment at government and non-government levels to the principles and practice of consumer participation in health care settings.

The case of James Macready-Bryan is a good example of how consumer participation can contribute to meaningful change. Some of this change has been at the local community level, through targeted health promotion initiatives, and at the national level, through the improvement of services to support individuals. However, there are many other examples of effective consumer participation in health care.

Your task is to discuss access and equity in health care and the value of consumer participation in the planning and implementation of health care.

Your essay should include:

What is meant by ‘access and equity’ and ‘consumer participation’ in relation to healthcare?
A description of factors which influence an individual’s and the community’s access to health and human services.
A discussion of the benefits for individuals and the broader community when consumers participate in the planning and implementation of their health care.
A description of some of the problems and barriers to effective consumer participation.
