Program Competencies
Hi all,
For this next discussion, you will be presenting an ethical dilemma that you or someone close to you has faced, and how you would handle it. Recall that you can also simply follow the first few sections of your Week 3 paper rubric to respond to this week’s discussion supported by 3 references, and you will be well on your way to pulling together your Week 3 paper 🙂
Here are some examples of ethical dilemmas for you to think about and consider, in case this is helpful to support you as a springboard and reflection for your writing; there are many other examples as well, so feel free to write about a different, unique example:
· A patient who has a drug addiction is admitted for extensive trauma, but the provider will not order adequate pain medication;
· Inadequate staffing with too many patients per nurse to provide necessary care for each one;
· Limited health care resources for too many critically ill patients;
· A patient who has low literacy levels and does not know what documents they are signing in the hospital;
· A patient who has a terminal illness expressed that they are ready to pass and wish to discontinue treatments, but do not have Advanced Directives;
· Something that conflicts with your sense of duty and compassion versus hospital safety protocols;
· A suspicion of abuse or maltreatment of a patient.
Also, here are some points to consider as you reflect:
What are ethical dilemmas in nursing?
Ethical dilemmas in nursing are situations where there are conflicting values, principles, or interests involved that make it difficult to determine the right course of action. They can arise when caring for patients, or in relationships with colleagues, employers, or the community.
Ethical dilemmas can arise from a range of situations, such as confidentiality, end-of-life care, patient autonomy, justice, and resource allocation.
How can ethical dilemmas in nursing be addressed?
Ethical dilemmas in nursing can be addressed by:
• Consulting with colleagues, supervisors, or ethics committees to discuss the situation and identify potential solutions.
• Examining the situation from different perspectives, including the patient’s, family’s, and healthcare provider’s.
• Applying ethical principles and values, such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, to guide decision-making.
• Communicating effectively with the patient and family members to ensure that they are informed and involved in the decision-making process.
• Maintaining a respectful and non-judgmental attitude towards patients, colleagues, and the community.
I hope this helps as a launching point for your reflection and writing about ethical dilemmas, I look forward to our discussion!
