In responding to your peers, please discuss how informatics impacts patient care delivery and professional nursing practice. Identify opportunities for improvement in the current use of collaboration strategies. (PLEASE GIVE A LOT OF DETAILS)
Demonstrate more depth and thought than simply stating that “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in each discussion prompt.
HERE IS WHAT THE PEER SAID:
One of the greatest milestones of information technology is using electronic health record systems. Using this technology, patient information is stored in a central repository that different cadres of staff the healthcare organizations can access. This easy access allows different interdisciplinary team members to access and share information useful in promoting quality and safe patient care. This access allows health professionals to coordinate care on an informed basis, and through the available comprehensive patient file, the interdisciplinary team is accorded the opportunity for a joint clinical decision based on shared data (Vos et al., 2020). Through instantaneous messaging, the time taken for communications between different cadres of health professionals has been reduced, and the messaging errors associated with verbal communication substantially reduced (Vos et al., 2020). Information technology allows health professionals to be precise in their messaging to their colleagues and reach their colleagues in an instant, shortening idiosyncrasies associated with verbal communication.
Nurses play a pivotal role in patient care and act as the intermediaries between the patients and the interdisciplinary teams. As a result, time management is important in allowing effective interdisciplinary collaboration. With increased communication between nurses and different members of interdisciplinary teams through technology such as instant messaging, nurses save time, leading to more time for patient care and improving patient outcomes (Rouleau et al., 2017). Nurses’ role in documentation during interdisciplinary team rounds has substantially changed, with nurses spending less time documenting patient information during these times, saving time for patient care (Rouleau et al., 2020). Nurses have substantially become autonomous due to the use of information technology, seeking interdisciplinary help only when necessary, improving their confidence. In conclusion, nurses’ role in interdisciplinary teams has greatly shifted with the automation of tasks, leading to increased nurses’ time for patient care rather than clerical duties associated with interdisciplinary teams.

IF THIS HELPS THIS IS WHAT I SAID:
The integration of information technology has greatly improved interdisciplinary team collaboration in healthcare. Healthcare professionals from different disciplines can easily communicate, share information, and collaborate on patient care through technology. This has led to better coordination, enhanced decision-making, and improved patient outcomes. One way technology facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration is by providing communication and information-sharing platforms. Electronic health record (EHR) systems enable healthcare professionals to access and update patient information in real-time, regardless of location. This allows for seamless collaboration between nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and other team members. For example, medication administration records (MAR) within EHR systems allow nurses, providers, and pharmacists to communicate and collaborate on medication management, reducing the risk of medication errors. According to Manias (2018), breakdowns in communication contribute to medication errors, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in ensuring patient safety
Furthermore, health information technology (HIT) has transformed the role of nurses within interdisciplinary teams. Nurses have become critical users of HIT, overseeing and managing patient information. They play a vital role in implementing and utilizing technology in healthcare settings. Zadvinskis et al. (2018) emphasize that nurses are the largest group of health information technology users. Nurses are responsible for fulfilling orders, documenting care, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of patient information within EHR systems. Their involvement in HIT promotes efficient and coordinated care delivery.
Technology, particularly HIT, has empowered nurses and enhanced their autonomy within the healthcare field. With HIT tools, nurses can access comprehensive patient data, make informed decisions, and contribute to care plans. For instance, when a patient arrives at the Emergency Department with a femur fracture, the nurse can promptly order pain medication through the MAR within the EHR system. By administering the medication and ensuring the patient’s comfort, the nurse prepares the patient for discussions with the provider and surgeon. With HIT, fulfilling orders promptly and documenting actions would be easier, hindering effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
