In responding to your peers, please discuss how informatics impacts patient care delivery and professional nursing practice. Identify opportunities for improvement in the current use of collaboration strategies. (PLEASE GIVE A LOT OF DETAILS)

Demonstrate more depth and thought than simply stating that “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in each discussion prompt.

HERE IS WHAT THE PEER SAID:

The increase in use of technology in the nursing profession has had profound effects on interdisciplinary team collaboration. It can allow for team members in different locations and even countries to utilize the same data in real time to improve workflows and patient care. Electronic medical records improve the nurses ability to meet the care needs of patients, reduce or prevent harm in the form or errors, and provide improved condition specific patient care (Jedwab, R. M., 2019). Technology also allows nurses and providers to utilize data and knowledge gathered from a large amount of clinical data from all over the world, and utilize this in providing patient care and improving outcomes (McGonigle, D., 2022. p 120).

The role of the nurse in an interdisciplinary team is to provide direct care to patients. Technology has changed the way this role is performed in several ways. Being able to utilize electronic medical records from a computer in the patients room can increase the time of actual bedside care, by not having to search a paper chart in a file room and being able to discuss patient concerns or health plans in real time. Having a HIPPA compliant chat program available allows nurses to communicate quickly with providers and other departments, without having to always call or page them and wait for a response. This increase in communication between team members is associated with reducing patient harm (Jedwab, R. M., 2019). One other example is receiving real time lab results via an alert in the EMR allowing nurses to act quickly to facilitate interventions.

IF THIS HELPS THIS IS WHAT I SAID:

The integration of information technology has greatly improved interdisciplinary team collaboration in healthcare. Healthcare professionals from different disciplines can easily communicate, share information, and collaborate on patient care through technology. This has led to better coordination, enhanced decision-making, and improved patient outcomes. One way technology facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration is by providing communication and information-sharing platforms. Electronic health record (EHR) systems enable healthcare professionals to access and update patient information in real-time, regardless of location. This allows for seamless collaboration between nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and other team members. For example, medication administration records (MAR) within EHR systems allow nurses, providers, and pharmacists to communicate and collaborate on medication management, reducing the risk of medication errors. According to Manias (2018), breakdowns in communication contribute to medication errors, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in ensuring patient safety

Furthermore, health information technology (HIT) has transformed the role of nurses within interdisciplinary teams. Nurses have become critical users of HIT, overseeing and managing patient information. They play a vital role in implementing and utilizing technology in healthcare settings. Zadvinskis et al. (2018) emphasize that nurses are the largest group of health information technology users. Nurses are responsible for fulfilling orders, documenting care, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of patient information within EHR systems. Their involvement in HIT promotes efficient and coordinated care delivery.

Technology, particularly HIT, has empowered nurses and enhanced their autonomy within the healthcare field. With HIT tools, nurses can access comprehensive patient data, make informed decisions, and contribute to care plans. For instance, when a patient arrives at the Emergency Department with a femur fracture, the nurse can promptly order pain medication through the MAR within the EHR system. By administering the medication and ensuring the patient’s comfort, the nurse prepares the patient for discussions with the provider and surgeon. With HIT, fulfilling orders promptly and documenting actions would be easier, hindering effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
