NOW I HAVE TO:

Respond substantively to at least two of your peers. Comment on the leadership attributes identified and the connections made between systems leadership and continuous quality. How do their responses compare to yours? Are there any similarities or differences that surprised you?

FOR THE DISCUSSION THIS IS WHAT I SAID:

Describe how Systems Leadership Connects to Continuous Quality

The success of healthcare systems relies heavily on the leadership of those within those systems. Leaders must take a system-wide view and work together across organizational levels and functions to improve healthcare delivery as a whole. Alignment, collaboration, and synergy are the hallmarks of effective systems leadership (Dreier et al., 2019) in the healthcare industry. A culture of quality and patient safety can flourish when an organization’s mission, goals, and initiatives are all in sync with one another.

Systems leadership in healthcare emphasizes being proactive in the face of problems with quality. Leaders improve care procedures and results through data analysis, stakeholder participation, and data-driven decisions. A culture of continuous improvement, where feedback loops and transparency allow healthcare workers to learn from mistakes, adapt to new situations, and innovate, is fostered by strong systems leadership, as noted by Bigland et al. (2020).

Identify and describe a leadership attribute that is needed by nurse managers to successfully affect quality improvement.

Nurse leaders who want to make a difference in healthcare quality should cultivate transformational leadership skills. According to Alanazi et al. (2022), a transformational leader is someone who can energize and drive their team to greater heights of achievement and dedication. Quality improvement programs are more successful when led by nurse managers with this trait.

Nurse managers that have the potential to transform their organizations are visionaries who set high standards for their staff. They participate in mental exercise, fostering an environment where employees are free to think critically and creatively. In addition, they encourage personalized care by catering to the specific requirements of each team member and playing to their particular talents (Iqbal et al., 2019).It has been found that employees are more likely to take initiative in their work, accept change, and contribute meaningfully to quality improvement initiatives when led by transformational nurse managers (Iqbal et al., 2019). In order to achieve long-term quality improvement in healthcare, this leadership quality is essential.

THE PEER SAID:

According to the World Economic Forum (2019), systems leadership is defined as a set of skills and capabilities that an individual or facility use to develop and support changes across the organization. Systems leadership utilized collaborative measures, partnerships, and systems to initiate change and action.

Healthcare utilizes systems leadership to implement policies, protocols, and initiatives to ensure high quality care. Systems leadership promotes quality care by evaluating and monitoring current practices and safety concerns, developing evidence-based solutions, and evaluating patient outcomes (Drew & Pandit, 2020). This approach also anticipates future challenges and proactively develops strategies to mitigate them, further supporting standards of care. The systems leadership infrastructure requires administration/management, healthcare providers, patients, and technology to identify areas of improvement and work together to achieve continuous quality.

Identify and describe a leadership attribute that is needed by nurse managers to successfully affect quality improvement.

The role of a nurse manager requires diverse characteristics and responsibilities to elicit positive changes in the clinical setting. To support quality improvement, a key feature that a nurse manager must possess is effective communication skills. An article by Fowler et al. (2021) identified that nurse leaders with proficient communication had a direct influence on positive patient outcomes and positive staff morale.

Nurse managers are responsible for communicating the challenges and safety issues that negatively impact patient outcomes. They are also responsible for communicating the solutions, desired results and goals for improvement. This information transfer must be clearly received and understood by staff so that they can implement such changes (Fowler et al., 2021). Nurse managers are troubleshooters, and they should be able to comprehensively articulate to staff the who, what, when, where, why, and how to promote quality improvements.
