Topic Discussion – Cannabis as Medication
Respond to the following in a minimum of 550 words:
After finishing the required reading for Week 5, you now better understand the pharmacologic principles surrounding substance use and abuse. While the topic for this week focuses on the development of tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, and the medications used to treat substance use disorders, clinicians must be able to identify recreational use of abusable substances. One of the most common recreational agents is cannabis. Due to the recent decriminalization across the United States, it is not uncommon for psychiatric clients to use cannabis recreationally. This use can fall short of the diagnosis of cannabis use disorder yet still be significant in assessing and treating clients for psychiatric conditions.
To participate in the discussion this week, please do the following:
Research recreational use of cannabis (hint: UpToDate may be helpful).
Discuss which psychiatric diagnoses may be affected most by cannabis use. Provide 1 reference to support your position.
Design a plan for how you will assess and respond to cannabis use within your practice.
