Discussion
Step 1: Read the following case study: ANSWER ALL 3 PARTS
1. A nurse has an order to complete a procedure on a patient. After reading the procedure, the nurse notices that it is not best practice and it has not been updated for 6 years. The nurse takes this issue to the nurse leader (charge nurse) and the nurse manager (unit manager).
STEP 2. What would you do as a nurse manager if your policy or procedure conflicts with the most recent evidence? Describe your response to this nurse.

Why is it important to update policies and procedures? What are the risks if they are outdated?

What is your role as a nurse manager in assuring policies or procedures are up to date?

STEP 3 – WHAT would you do as a nurse leader if your policy or procedure conflicts with the most recent evidence? describes your response to the nurse

Your discussion post should look like:

Paragraph one: What would you do as a nurse manager, if your policy or procedure conflicts with the most recent evidence? Describe your response to this nurse.
Paragraph two: Why is it important to update policies and procedures? What are the risks if they are outdated?
Paragraph three: What is your role as a nurse manager in assuring policies or procedures are up to date?
Resources: Where did you find your data? one scholarly you can include is from this paragraph see below
Policies and Procedures in the Workplace
for purposes of clarity, the term policy is the content described in the previous section. The term policies refers to workplace standards to guide decisions in order to achieve organizational outcomes (Huston, 2020). The term procedure refers to a detailed list of steps approved by the workplace to perform a task and achieve a good patient outcome.

Comparison of Policies and Procedures

Used with Procedures
What steps can be used in developing or revising procedures?OLICIES

Written in broader terms
Why or what statements
Standards endorsed by facility
Guides decisions by staff
Gives general direction for achieving outcomes or PROCEDURES

Detailed outline of steps to perform a task
How, when, who, or what
Revised periodically
Based on current evidence
Should have evidence-based resources that support the steps and instructions
May be called a protocol

Review the current procedure including the evidence supporting the steps.
If no evidence is provided in the procedure, then the committee will need to locate the most current best evidence in revising the procedure. With specific search terms, the facility librarian can be of great help in locating scholarly articles containing this evidence.
If the evidence in the reviewed procedure is not current, contact the librarian to help obtain the most current evidence.
The Joint Commission requires that healthcare facilities have standard processes for reviewing procedures and current evidence to support these (Huston, 2020). Follow the standard process for your facility’s review timeline. Many facilities review every procedure every two years, but some do so more often.
For some common procedures, many facilities use an online or computer-based repository of procedures instead of the old-fashioned manuals. Even if this is the case at your facility, check to make sure that the repository is kept up to date, has the most current evidence, and uses equipment available to nurses at your facility.
Nurses (leaders from direct care and from administration) are often at the forefront of revising procedures to be consistent with current evidence, consultation with other departments involved in the procedure is highly recommended (Huston, 2020).
