This week, we covered the topic of healthcare reform from a historical perspective – looking at past efforts, program reform attempts, and the current Affordable Care Act provisions. We also discussed future reform proposals. FIRST, read the short article Five Ethical Values to Guide Health System Reform
that describes some basic principles on which to move forward – the topic you are to post about is Quality.
• Quality
In your discussion post, reflect on the various ways health policy over the last 50 years has attempted to address the topic your group chose to focus on based on the readings this week and your own knowledge and individual research. Also, consider how current legislation advances (or doesn’t) the goals of universal coverage, quality and affordability. The Jonas and Kovner text (Chapters 10-14 in particular) is a great resource.
Create a discussion post that describes:
• The problem and its consequences
• The rationale for addressing the problem via a health policy tool
• The policy progress made on addressing the problem, with 2-3 specific examples
• How (or if) the ACA, ARP, or IRA addressed this issue
• What are the current proposals to advance progress in this area?
The post should also contain a short executive summary that ties all the information together at the start. Revise the post for coherence – making sure each section ties to the others and does not contain contradictions.
