Directions
Social Media discussions are designed to promote dialogue between faculty and students, and students and their peers using a social media platform as inspiration. In the social media discussions, students:
Demonstrate understanding of concepts for the week
Integrate outside scholarly sources and social media postings
Engage in meaningful dialogue with classmates and/or instructor
Express opinions clearly and logically, in a professional manner
Discussion Question
Problems that impact populations are vast and now more than ever social media is getting involved.

Substance use
Environmental health (air, water, ground, energy, climate, etc.)
https://enviro.epa.gov/myenvironment/ (Links to an external site.) has a wealth of information
Violence
Abuse
Research and share an overview of the current data on this population health problem specific to your community. You must use one (or more) of the resources from the Direct Care Project Part 1: Assessment and Diagnosis assignment. You may choose to find additional outside source(s).
Then take a moment to review the Twitter feed for compelling Tweets that may have an impact on or discuss the population health problem.
Give an overview of any agency, organization, person, or affiliation that is addressing the population health problem.
How could a community health nurse collaborate with the agency, organization, person, or affiliation address the population health problem?
Compose a 280-character or fewer Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class. Remember Twitter only allows 280 characters (this includes spaces, etc.) so you will need to be concise. It should include a hashtag. Include the URL to the reference or Tweet if applicable. Share this Tweet in the discussion.
Note: A Twitter account is not required nor is posting your Tweet on social media.
Your discussion post should look like:
Paragraph one: Overview of the current data on this population health problem specific to your community
Paragraph two: Overview of any agency, organization, person, or affiliation that is addressing the population health problem
Paragraph three: How could a community health nurse collaborate with the agency, organization, person, or affiliation to address the population health problem?
Tweet: 280-character or fewer Tweet with hashtag and reference if applicable.
Resources: Where did you find your data?
Example Tweet: Your zip code can have more of an impact on your health than your genetic code. Know your stats. #socialdeterminantsofhealth #SDoH #knowyourstats https://enviro.epa.gov/myenvironment/

substance abuse reading -Community health nurses in all settings may encounter substance abuse issues with patients and families. This health problem continues to grow in both size and scope, and it threatens our communities in terms of safety and health. Let’s look at some important assessment strategies regarding substance abuse (Nies & McEwen, 2019).
Discern the difference between use, misuse, and abuse to address the problem successfully.
Recognize that using harmful substances impacts all leading health indicators.
Note whether physiological dependence is still present while attempting recovery.
It may be defined differently from the classical or clinical definition of dependence or addiction.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (U.S. DHHS, n.d.a) oversees SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. SAMHSA is providing leadership and resources through its programs, policies, data collection, contracts, and grants to help the nation understand that
Clinical Connection
SAMHSA (U.S. DHHS, 2018) provides reports and data specific to location, population, substance and more. Go to https://www.samhsa.gov/data/all-reports (Links to an external site.) to learn more.
Were you surprised by the prevalence of use of illicit substances and alcohol? Are you aware of treatment facilities that serve your community? How can interdisciplinary collaboration positively impact outcomes?
Not only are there health concerns when people engage in substance abuse but there are ethical considerations when those who are impaired attempt to drive, work, attend school, and act in other situations where innocent people can be hurt (Nies & McEwen, 2019). Organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD, 2017) raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and underage drinking.
A population that has been targeted for prevention is pregnant women. Expectant mothers may be prosecuted, imprisoned, and lose custody of their children if they abuse substances that may harm their unborn children. Consider your attitude toward people who abuse substances. Are you sympathetic, critical, or accusatory? Do you believe your attitude affects the nursing care you provide?
What groups exist in your community who address the problem of substance abuse? Go online and search the Internet to locate resources in your community. Some may be local, whereas others may be state or national organizations that serve your region.
