Lesson Introduction
This week, we will begin discussing the medical management of pediatric patients when they present to your primary care facility. First, you will read about certain pearls that you need to be aware of when prescribing to the pediatric population, including weight, race, and allergies. We will review multiple infectious diseases and vaccinations that are available to prevent some of these conditions. We will also review performing a school physical and at what age these are required. You will also read and discuss common injuries encountered in a primary care practice and how to treat them appropriately.
Most of your acute visits involving the pediatric population will involve the ears, eyes, mouth, or throat, which are also topics of this week’s lesson. I know some of this will be review, but it is important that you get a good, basic understanding of these disorders and how to treat them using evidence-based practices. We will need to educate parents and caregivers as to when their child has a bacterial infection and needs an antibiotic, and when their child has a virus. It is up to you, as new advanced-practice providers, to help in the crusade to decrease antibiotic resistance. Good luck.
This week reviews the signs and symptoms of multiple common injuries and infectious conditions and how to provide evidence-based treatment. The reading discusses the pearls involved when prescribing to the pediatric population for these conditions. Materials include two great resources for immunization schedules that recognize their role in preventing specific infectious diseases. You will also practice performing a school physical.
This lesson also reviews how to perform a symptom-focused history for ear, eye, and oral disorders, so that an accurate diagnosis and treatment can be provided.
