This week are assignment focuses on a fundamental theme in this course. That theme is the concept of variation and our ability to minimize it.
In order to accomplish that goal we introduce two types of variation. These are common cause variation and special cause variation.
Common cause variation is the inherent variation that occurs in all processes and activities. This type of variation may be reduced to some extent but it can never be eliminated.
Special cause variation is the second type and it is due to special events that do not normally occur but happen when abnormal situations occur. Our goal here is to identify these situations and to eliminate the problems which are causing these abnormal occurrences.
