The article I provided discusses the rise of prescription drugs in New Jersey and its high costs. New Jersey is also known for its opioid epidemic and heroin epidemic. Could this be the cause of high drug costs? Maybe. Since opioids in NJ are easily accessible to teens and locals. However, before I get side tracked, this article discusses the big-name brand drugs such as Lyrica, Januvia, Norvasc, Lipitor, etc. It mentions Senator Troy Singleton and him promoting a bill that would prohibit anyone for charging people insane prices for drugs that would benefit their research. As a health care professional, the ethical problem is simple, with high drug costs patients wouldn’t be able to obtain their medications that they need on a daily basis. This is a major concern for me because situations and problems like this is what lands patients in the hospital and gets the progressively sicker. ”Growth in drug spending slowed in 2016 after 2 years of growth well above increases in other health care expen- ditures.1 The short-term reasons for the slowing of spending were fewer new medicines coming onto the market and slower price growth for existing brand- name drugs” (Custer, 2018). A community health nurse can definitely help patients out by finding insurance plans that help with costs and also possibly collaborating with physicians and switch patients from brands to generic. If patients had to have brand, there are also a lot of coupons out there that the big-name pharmacies do not tell customers about. I used to work at a small neighborhood pharmacy where we always found coupons for patients and it helped them tremendously. “Support from the state and federal governments and private sector assistance are needed to assist with identifying and solving health-related problems afflicting the minority communities” (2015).
