Health and Human Populations
Health statistics is important, as it provides indicators that help us learn about the conditions of life and health in a country. It is used to understand both individual health and also the health of an entire nation. Additionally, health statistics helps us to understand the significance of healthcare in that it allows us to analyze and interpret data which could improve the health of populations. As we monitor the health of populations, we enhance our understanding of strategies to promote its health. To help us understand the health of populations, we must also understand the importance of having access to adequate healthcare coverage.
Today, healthcare is commonly recognized as a system of indicators that are necessary to measure the comprehension of the right to healthcare. Many organizations, including civil society agencies, academic institutions, and businesses initiate efforts in educating the public about the importance of having access to quality healthcare.
One of the most critical challenges here in the U.S. is the integration of the right to adequate healthcare coverage and national health policies. One may question whether the right to healthcare is a recognized element of domestic concern, or if it should be integrated into national health-related policies. Regardless, healthcare is an essential part of society as it provides individuals an avenue to receive treatment which aids in the prevention of illnesses and diseases.
In the U.S., the cost of healthcare continues to rise, and for many uninsured or underinsured Americans, this is not a positive sign. Although Americans object replacing the current healthcare system with one regulated by the federal government by a 51% to 39% margin, and small-business owners oppose it by a 49% to 43% margin, it is becoming quite clear that many Americans are finding it harder to obtain adequate coverage to meet their healthcare needs (Jacobe, 2007).

What is Population Health?
In order to develop an understanding of what “Population Health” means, start by examining the component words. Population can be described as all the inhabitants of a particular town, area, or country. Population can also be a particular section, group, or type of people or animals living in an area. Health can be described as a state of being free from illness/injury or a person’s mental or physical condition.
It is understandable that most of us consider our health care as something provided to us as an individual by other individuals or teams, for example our doctor, midwife, nurse or dentist. Population health challenges you to look at health from a different perspective. Think about the population as a whole. What are the challenges that we all face? With Population Health, we start with the premise of having an understanding of the health of a population group to enable people to make better decisions about their own health care and they can also enable health workers to make better decisions about individuals and populations within their care.
