The BIG PROBLEM BACKGROUND: Only around 15% of Philadelphia County in children ages 5-11 are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to analysis of federal data from Kaiser Health News reported in January 2022. By comparison, the surrounding counties — Montgomery, Chester, Bucks and Delaware — are seeing higher vaccination rates for the age group, ranging between 26% to 39%.

LITERATURE REVIEW: Please include/incorporate 4 must-have references (see below) in this review section

AIMS/PURPOSES – To conduct a survey for parents/guardians of children between the ages of 5 to 11 years to gain a better understanding of parents’ perception and intent to vaccinate their children and reasons for their decisions for or against COVID-19 vaccination in this age group.

HYPOTHESIS – I hypothesize that LACK of trust in COVID-19 effect and safety issue (due to parents’ low education level, low health literacy, limited access to credible sources, and other racial/social determinants) contributes to low rate of vaccine acceptance

RESEARCH QUESTION – Is there a relationship between parents’ perception of COVID-19 vaccine effect and safety issue and parents’ intent to vaccinate their 5 to 11 year old children?

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
Qualitative research design (a cross-sectional, non-experimental, descriptive design using survey questions)
Sample: total sample size of parents/guardians of 5-11 age children currently attending Philadelphia School district
Setting: mailed paper survey and/or online survey sent to parents/guardians by school district board
Time frame:4 weeks (Nov to Dec 2023)

PROPOSED ANALYSIS: Thematic analyses

IMPLICATIONS: Understanding parent’s intent and reasons can help with strengthening public health education to increase parents’s knowledge and improve vaccine acceptance
