Create a discussion post (or reply to a classmates posting) in which you reflect on the relationship of the American educational system and job market and how you think this could affect your transition to the job market.

You might be starting to wonder what this means for your future career. For this assignment you should read From Student to Worker by Alan C. Kerckhoff. It is Chapter 12 in the Handbook of the Life Course edited by Jeylan T. Mortimer, Michael J. Shanahan. You can access this ebook via the FIU Library website. Create a discussion post (or reply to a classmates posting) in which you reflect on the relationship of the American educational system and job market and how you think this could affect your transition to the job market. Dont make this too academic: think of how the Liberal Studies or Interdisciplinary Studies degree, down-the-road, can best sell you in an ever-evolving job market. It is ok to express anxiety about what either degree means for you (many of your peers will sympathize), but it is key to take ownership of your education. You may have landed in either degree after switching out of other degree programs, but our slogan is that the degrees are ones of choice not last resort.

Every student asks themselves, their professors or academic advisors this question at some point in their educational career. Its a question Liberal Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies advisors get asked a lot. ? The underlying fear is that these degrees will not adequately prepare graduates for the job market when, in reality, they are just as valuable as an undergraduate degree in Biology, Psychology, English etc. An important caveat here is that most Bachelors degrees do not prepare you for a specific profession but rather serve as a prerequisite to enter the job market as an aspiring professional. Exceptions to this rule are degrees in fields such as Nursing, Engineering, Architecture, but as those who have attempted to get into these programs know, they are not open to the masses. A majority of college graduates at FIU and elsewhere will therefore earn degrees that equip them with a broad range of transferable skills rather than training for a specific profession. You (or your parents!) may say theres no job out there called Liberal Studies (unlike a Journalism degree where you become a Journalist) but that can also be to your advantage because you can create a job-good narrative around the degrees self-tailoring features.
