Interview a Nurse Leader assignment
This assignment provides you the opportunity to apply your knowledge of leadership approaches and theories to evaluate the skills, values, and methods of someone currently serving in a leadership position. Each student will be required to write a reflection on their interview experience in part II.
Select a nurse who acts in the role of a leader or manager. This may be a leader or manager in acute care, community agencies, research, academia, or leading a professional organization. This person must have at least a master’s degree (MSN) or higher (DNP or PhD) and at least 5 years nursing and 2 years leadership experience.

This is not a question-and-answer paper. It must be written in a narrative form. Please synthesize the information gained from the interview.
Part I. interview of the nurse leader.
Directions: Use the questions below to prepare your narrative paper and ask for a response to each question. Narrative form refers to a descriptive writing approach that discloses details of an act, event, or phenomenon. It tells a story meant to lead the reader to an important conclusion or meaningful realization or life lesson.
The student is to interview the nurse leader with the following questions:
1. Please tell me about your role, education, and professional experience.
2. How do you define leadership and how would you describe your leadership style?
3. In your opinion, what is the difference between a manager or leader, or is there one?
4. Describe the steps taken to get in your current leadership position.
5. What changes and challenges will nurses face in the future?
6. What do you feel is the most challenging problem facing healthcare leaders today?
7. What has been your biggest challenge as a leader?
8. What has been your greatest achievement as a leader?
9. What is the most significant lesson you have learned about leadership?
10. What barriers do you see to the provision of quality patient care?
11. What types of healthcare entities could work better with organizations like yours in order to promote continuity of patient/client care?
12. How has your organization changed its strategy in response to outside forces such as the accountable care act?
13. How do you resolve conflict and address issues of lateral violence within your organization?
14. Provide an example of how an unwanted variation that occurred within the last year on the unit changed practice and improved patient outcomes.
15. Tell me about a nurse leader or manager who influenced you. What were the qualities about this person that made him/her a great leader or manager?
16. What advice if any would you provide to an aspiring nurse leader like myself?
Part II: Individual Post Reflection: Your reflection should include the following (this section should be no more than 1 page of the entire paper): Analysis of this leader’s leadership Style (Use citations from current literature to support leadership characteristics or theories): In your analysis include the answers to the following questions:
1. Why did you choose to interview this individual?
2. What made this leader you interviewed unique and impressionable?
3. What were some key attributes that you liked about this leader?
4. What information most surprised you from the interview and what was most useful?
5. Describe how this experience has influenced your own personal definition of “leadership”. New insights to your leadership Style (Use citations from current literature to support leadership characteristics or theories and reference).
Important note: Your paper must be in APA style/format, legible font, double spaced with appropriate citations as needed (Minimum 3 pages and up to 5 pages excluding references). You must use at least 2 articles other than your textbook to support your narratives. Please be sure to send a thank you note to your leader. It will be important to send your list of questions to the nurse leader prior to the interview. The student will also compare the information obtained during the interview to what was learned from reading and class discussion about the leader’s practices.
