For our interprofessional concept class, we were divided into groups of ten professionals with Different occupational backgrounds. We were given a task to create patient/service user Information about the particular profession we are studying. This task was a formative task to Presentation to the other groups how patients would want be informed in regards to the Professions the different health workers play a part in their care. The presentation could be a Role play, a PowerPoint presentation, or handing out leaflets to the class and talking about the Type of information available to the service user. As a group, we chose PowerPoint presentation. We nominated one member of the group to act as a leader to collect the information from all of Us, so it can be put in a PowerPoint presentation. The information was gathered from the Different sources that explain about that particular health care profession. I was one of two Operating department practitioner trainee who was a member of the group that contributed. There were ten members in total, the group consist of radiographers, occupational therapist,Acupuncture, radiotherapy. This assignment is a reflection based essay on my participation and Observation.

On this group based assignment I will be reflecting on my learning, interaction with the other

Students and experience being part of group. I will discuss that interprofessional learning

Education is important to enhance to my already gained interpersonal skills on the job.

Interprofessional learning education is when two or more professions learn with, from and

About each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care (Arnold 2013)

Through learning both in academy and work‐based settings prior or following qualification,

Giving overall view of professional some of benefits to the learner are develops skills for

Successful multidisciplinary team, to improve communication when working in team and that

Improves interprofessional relations which ultimately improves patient care and creates for the Student comfortable environment to share their views and knowledge in the absence of the normal hierarchy ((Arnold 2013)….I will be explaining/discussing about the positive and negative experience I had while I got involved in in planning the group presentation. What group working was able to achieve that had not been achieved by other forms activity. We had a common ground that we were not alone with creating task we had each other to depend on. The group tasks provided us with an opportunity to think about and plan for very important experience and prospects.

To be honest I never keen working in group unless I was comfortable with all the group members. There was different age group/range, some younger than others. I felt my opinion was always respected I did not feel once ignored which was great, that made me confident and valued. I did enjoy being in the group, they were friendly students. I was one of two people who had experience working in health care sector which gave me a better understanding what was expected of me during the task. I knew how important it were to be a good team player and the advantage of communicating effectively across the profession in the healthcare sector to enhance care and improve patient’s safety ((Higgs et al. 2005 and Moss 2012) Being in a group I felt a sense of being valued.I have previously worked as theatre support worker some time I did feel valued by the staff because I was lower grade than them or I was not seen as being equal.

The first ever meeting we had as a group was to discuss how we were going about communicating with each other. This was the first time we had to speak to each other and got talking about what courses we are doing. We had a good communication with each other.

On our second meeting, one of our group member felt that their profession was not taken seriously and valued. During the group meeting the individual did not show or indicate to us that they were unhappy about the discuss we had. We only found out when individual later on sent a whatsapp message saying we did not respect the ground rule as a group we created at our first group discussion .This was their way of telling us the individual was not happy about the situation they found themselves in. As time went on we did not hear lot from our team member, withdrew from the group presentation and trying to contact them failed.

The group did their best to overcome this unexpected awkward situation and carried on. At this early stage of group forming we were able to reorganize ourselves move on with the task.

There were clear leaders that came out from our group. Personally I was relieved someone else took that leadership role. Having a disagreement in the group strengthened the group instead tip toeing around the issues that matter. This discussion we made was a collective effort by every one of us. This can relate to the Storming stage of the model allowing us able to move to the next stage of Norming.

Tuckman original observation work 1965 later revised in 1975 (as cited in Adam, 2011) describes five stages: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and adjourning that a group experience as they come together and start working. At the Forming stage individuals may hold back expressing their thoughts and just gather information and impressions – about each other for fear of not being accepted and just focus on the organization of the group/team. While some individuals will chose to stay at this comfortable stage some individual’s patience will break early, at the Storming stage and minor confrontation will arise whether it be in relation to the work of the group itself or to roles and responsibilities within the group. This will make things to be clearer among the group and form rules to prevent future conflicts. As a result the group will have better understanding with each other and appreciate/respect each other skills and experience and listen to each other by the time they get /at the third stage, Norming. At the Performing stage the group has got to know each other really well and trust each other and direct their efforts to completing the task. The final stage is about completing the task/s and feeling achievement within a group. This model has significance in health and social care professionals by recognizing where a team is in the process, and helping it to move to the Performing stage (Adam, 2010).

Working with groups became popular in the 1970s- 1980s as workers in health and social care put into practical theories about how people behave in social groups. Their basic assumption was that being a member of a group could be helpful or therapeutic, especially with as killed group leader, they argued that people can learn and Acquire new skills through group membership particularly when they draw on other people’s experience, and that sometimes being a member of a group can help people to understand achieve personal development (Milson,1973)

Communicate feeling to one of us. In the healthcare environment, I have found you have to have a thick skin to be able to do your job effectively. During my experience in healthcare at an intermediate level, I have had to deal in many situation That was difficult in professional manner. From my experience for a group to work smoothly, all Part concerned need time to get know each other. People need to know your weakness and strength And to be able feel comfortable with each other. The group I belong too did acknowledge the different roles I and other members played. This Important it helps patient care within the healthcare sector whether they theatre practitioners or Radiographers professional. This task is a building block for a future career in healthcare profession Which I am already practising. The knowledge I have gained in this task will further help me to Communicate information to my colleague in theatre and any profession I come across within the Hospital setting. The type information we provide in the healthcare sector helps service users make Decide on option available to them from the information provided by health care industry. There is expectation I think are all supposed to be well informed and more involved with the organisation in which we are employed. There is a big gap still between the service user and practitioners.

Some people did not pull their weight. They waited for things to be done for them. When getting involved in a group no one was sure how anybody was going to react when we aired our view about a situation. The reason this was early on in the group meeting, one person did not turn up for the next meeting and dropped out. Because from my understanding the individual felt their chosen profession was not respected .The ground rules we created at the start was an attempt for managing conflicts and for keeping the group process going. We had to carry on without the individual. I found the individual not turning up for the following weeks to our meeting little upsetting. They could at least communicate their feeling to one of us to try to solve the problem. In healthcare environment I have found you have to have a thick skin to be able to do your job effectively. Effective communication is very important in a team work.

During my experience in healthcare at intermediate level I have had to deal in many situations which were difficult in professional manner. From my experience for a group to work smoothly, all part concerned need time to get knew each other. People need to know their weakness and strength to feel comfortable with each other ( little child , Smith 2013).

The group I belong too did acknowledge the different roles I and other members played. This is important to helps patient care within the healthcare sector weather they theatre practitioners or radiographers professional. This task was a building block for future career in healthcare profession which I am already part of. The knowledge I have gained in this task will further help me to communicate information to my colleague in theatre and any profession I come across with in the hospital setting. The type information we provide in the healthcare sector helps service users make decide on option available to them from the information provided by health care industry.

There is expectation I think, that we are all supposed to be well informed and more involved with the organization in which we are employed. There is a big gap still between service user and practitioners. This was why I found very little information about my profession, people do not have idea what theatre department practitioner do. It is easier for service users to understand what radiographers do as they have been a long time there and are visible at the outpatient setting. There is a lack of information available in the wide community about theatre practitioner what exactly they do in the hospital environment. Everyone I asked has replayed “what exactly do they do in the hospital?”

As you can see whether we seek out groups for information or social and supportive reasons, they play a part in our lives, changing us and changing the people with whom we come into contact. With group experience, I have become more empowered to take decisions during my daily tasks it has changed me as a person, I have become better informed and feel supported within a group.

This has worked for me as individual within group; at times, however, it can also work against those who may not find the group experience helpful, or who for various reasons are finding themselves Up against a powerful group who would not give them a chance to speak or express their view . Knowing how groups work in broad contexts in hospitals and society generally helps. As i have learned from the different speakers we had during the two semester.

The bad communication with a group can happen due to not having better understanding about each other feelings and having not spent with each other beforehand . As in health care setting we are meeting the patients for the first time we need to know a little about them if the ward nurse have communicated to us about who they are and what condition they have. The patient feel they can open up to practitioner a lot easier.

Conclusion

Although we had one missing profession which was acupuncture in the end the team came with

right combination of information and give a great presentation. One of the panels which was

representing service users said we worked well as team we had “ love” was commented by another tutor overlook the presentation.

The first i hear about the part of module i was not looking forward to it . As time went on i was slow changing to the idea into why this module fit with the rest of the course i am studing. I can see why many incidents that occur in healthcare can be avoided. The service user needs to get a complete package when they are transfer from one profession to another and those profession that they come across must able to pass the message about their condition within the healthcare sector. As a group, we could have made a service user information leaflet but we decided to create slide on powerpoint. The reason we went ahead with the power-point presentation was for all of the members of the groups to have some contribution toward the final presentation. If we decide on leaflet it would have allowed us to present the service user information in best possible way it. The team member would not have actively participated .We rehearse by reading about our particular profession two weeks before the presentation date.

As a group, we could have made a service user information leaflet but we decided to create slide on PowerPoint. The reason we went ahead with the PowerPoint presentation was for all of the Members of the groups to have some contribution towards the final presentation. We practiced and rehearsed by reading about our particular profession.

we got the work done and did fair share as group to work hard and meet commitments. The group followed through on completing the assignments. Consistency is key. we can count on all the member that where left except for one person to deliver goods and show a good performance all the time, not just some of the time Teams need people who speak up and express their thoughts and ideas clearly, directly, honestly, and with respect for others and the work of the team. That is what it means to communicate constructively. Such a team member does not keep quiet from making a point but makes it in the best way possible in a positive, confident, and respectful manner.

From my experience in the group, my fellow team members treated each other with courtesy and Consideration, consistently at all time. In addition they showed understanding towards each other and support each other appropriately to get the job done. My group assisted me with my contribution toward the group task by encourage it was very Informative, they helped me unconditionally they were good listeners and they were always willing To share information with me and the whole group also. We had a laugh as we got to know each other. Good sense of humour helps team bonding. They always treated each other in professional manner. I was grateful for those people that took the task of taking notes during meetings. They were willing to write for everyone without. They only cared about what they were doing, they were Happy to contribute to the team’s success. Committed team players look beyond their portion of work and care about the completion of teams Overall task. As a group we stayed commitment to achieve the best and we felt worthy of winners. As a group we felt we have contributed to the success of our team. If an employee is motivated by winning as a team member that in turn improves employee performance. Where I work my colleagues nominate me for the employee of quarterly. I was so surprised to get Nominated they must felt I was doing a good job. I was courage for this type of feedback where others you work with have a method to support and show appreciation.
