You will have noticed that Sherwood and Barnsteiner is actually an edited book, composed of chapters written by different authors. For this paper, you will be required to cite the authors of the specific chapter where you found the information. See example below as well as under Patient Centered Care.

This statement is made by Johnson, in Ch. 6 of Sherwood. Johnson is the author of the chapter, in the book edited by Sherwood and Barnsteiner.
The introduction should describe why the topic is important, ie as a result of the IOM Quality Chasm Series (as cited in Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2012) reports on the lack of quality and safety in our current healthcare system, six competencies for nursing practice were developed. These competencies were used to guide initiatives designed to improve nursing practice and transform nursing education. The topic sentence in the introduction should cue the reader what the paper is about. All information must be documented according to APA. Include a purpose statement that indicates what the paper is about, ie to describe the IOM competencies related to quality and safety and how the QSEN (citation) project has had implications for either nursing education or nursing leadership. Indicate that, in addition, an analysis of the information will be provided.

This paper will describe the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project (as cited in Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2012) including the original five core competencies developed by the IOM (2003), and the added sixth competency, safety. Each 1st level heading within a paper needs an introductory statement and/or paragraph. What is this section about, ie an introduction indicating that the IOM competencies will be described, including why they were developed, what the purpose is, how they are being used.
This introduction should be given followed by a clear and succinct summary of each competency, which should have a 2nd level heading (see example below) and be one paragraph long. Each 2nd level heading needs a clear topic sentence indicating what the paragraph will be about. Define each of the IOM competencies. Briefly describe the essence of the competency – ie what is the overall idea and how will implementing this competency lead to improvement in quality and safety.
