Most new hires are given several documents that expound the numerous rules, policies and operating standards on their
first day of employment. These documents may be gathered in an employee handbook and may consist of a copy of the
organization’s code of ethics which delineates the organization’s professional values, a code of conduct which relates
basic rules such as work hours, dress code, company property restraints and where to park your car, etc. It can be
overwhelming for a new employee to try to remember all the rules. Typically, the employee handbook just gathers dust on
the shelf and the new hire follows the behavior of other employees.
• How can an organization ensure that employees are aware of and are following the expected behaviors that will lead to
ethical conduct? Is reading a Code of Ethics at the hiring stage enough?
• What are some of the characteristics of effective employee training? Do the training sessions have to be in a formal
