Halloween dramatizes this theme by characterizing Michael Myers as a monster whose sexual corruption as a child leads him to brutally murder small town teenagers. This paper analyzes how Halloween serves as a cautionary tale about the need for personal sobriety and vigilance in a world in which the evil Myers symbolizes is pervasive.

1. Halloween as a Horror Film: Robin Wood suggests that horror films are our collective nightmares and that the monster is the embodiment of all that the social order represses; it is the “return of the repressed” and the embodiment of the “other.” Belton similarly argues that horror explores the relationship between the human and non-human on basis of encounters between the self and “other.” Halloween exemplifies these aspects of horror by defining Myers as a sexual deviant whose “otherness” springs from his premature initiation into adulthood after he witnesses his sister engaging in sex with her boyfriend.
2. The Family as Site of Return of the Repressed: Modern horror defines the family as an institution that both harbors and represses otherness, oftentimes by constructing children as monsters. The psychoanalytical significance of otherness is that is functions not simply as something external to the culture or the self, but what is repressed (but never destroyed) in the self and projected outward in order to be hated or disowned. The Myers in Halloween are a horrific mirror image of a “normal” family because their youngest child is a monster. As an “other,” Michael is both human and non-human, an embodiment of sexual tendencies repressed by normal family values.
